MOVIE REVIEW - 30 Days Of Night

Ok since our site is primarely horror shorts, i thought i should be doing movie reviews on Horror flicks. So this week ive decided to review 30 Days of Night.

30 Days of Night stars Josh Hartnett (The Faculty) and Melissa George (The Amityville Horror). The movie starts off with some dude walking in the snow , then stumbling upon a ship! Uh oh, troubles coming!! Thats basically the look he had on his face. Really bad snowy weather, people are leaving, people are staying, yaadda yaadda yadda then boom night hits. As you can see im not a journalist, so bare with me. So anyway, the movie takes place in Alaska, so at some point of the year Alaska has 30 days of no sun, so this is an awesome set up for vampires to come and reek havok.

So yes, this is indeed a vampire flick. The movie starts off really good by keeping the identities of the vampires a mystery. Then slowly through the film people are killed and more vampires are shown. Then it happends. The leader of the vampires show up, and he opens his fucking mouth. Now the only way i can describe the "vampire language" is to compare it to Louis Gossit Jr. in Enemy Mine, go rent it if you dont know what im talking about. The sound of the language was so fucking anoying you can tell the guy was making up words on the fly. Im pretty sure he said the same vampire sentence 9 times but they ment something different in english.

So as the movie progresses they try to make you feel sorry for certain characters of the movie, like for example an old lady dies, but at the end you dont care. Another example is where Josh Hartnetts best friend decides to kill his family before the vampires even think of getting to them, which i thought was weird. I think Reason being is basicaly the writers failing to make you connect with the characters. There was alot of moments where you were supposed to cry or feel bad for fallen townspeople, but you just dont.

Another thing i hated about this flick is how they digitaly distort the vampires faces, it was so obnoxious to look at these things knowing how fake they look. What happend to good ol fashion make up and talent.
On a positive note the movie did have a very cool feel of camera work. I liked how the movie looked and i loved the special effects when it came to deaths. Even though 75 % of it was C.G. It wasn't as noticable as in other movies. Out of all the vampires, i thought the leader looked the coolest. But he's the leader , he's supposed to look the coolest, but i realized the only reason why he looked the best is because he didn't have C.G. touch up on his face.

In the end the movie lacked pace and characters!! The movie just drags and drags, you basically feel like your waiting the whole 30 days with them. And trust me, no one wants to feel that way, especially for a movie to end.Unfortunately i did. I would have enjoyed it more chilling at home. But compared to vampire flicks that been coming out, this one was pretty good, just not good enough for me. I think everyone should wait for this one to come out on DVD.
