MOVIE REVIEW - The Mist
Let me start off by saying that going into watching this movie i wasn't very excited or anxious about seeing this movie because i didn't know anything about this movie. The only thing i knew about it was from what Mario told me on this last podcast we recorded (Beyond The Grave - Episode 7), and all i had to go off was that it was like Half Life , which is a video game. So because of the fact that i love half life so much, and someone out there was reminded of it while watching this movie, i thought what the hell lets check this out.
The Mist is based off of a Steven King novella, and is about a strange mist that covers a small town one day and traps a group of locals in a super market. One of the things that worried me was that the whole movie was going to take place in this supermarket, and sure enough i was pretty much right. Half way into the movie, it wasn't really a big deal that you were stuck in the market with the people because it causes you to feel how there supposed to, trapped and frustrated. I caught myself really getting into the story once they introduced this local preacher lady that swears the mist is the "End of Days". She slowly gets people to become followers of her preachings, and it began to piss me off alot, any movie that gets me to believe in a character enough to hate em is doing a great job in my book.
So ok , a quick run through, the mist starts consuming anyone and everyone who dares walk into it, at first you just hear there screams, but slowly they start showing you whats inside the mist doing all this damage. Without spoiling the plot to much ill say this much, the "things" in the mist are not monsters, nor animals that you would see on the discover channel, but the are living things that like to kill, if that makes sense. So with that said they didn't have people in suites, but what movies these days go that route anyways, it was of course CGI. You would think that it's 2007 and the CGI in movies would be ridiculously good, but i guess they didn't have the budget to hire the big dogs so i think they had to settle for tv cg people. The first showing of the things in the mist was such a horrible display, it was really really fake looking. That had me worried for the most part cause any thing that looked that lousy can only hurt the film. Fortunately later on in the film the cg got a little better for some reason, maybe they were split up into teams to see who works on what in the movie, but the middle to the end cgi was pretty good for the most part.
The Mist delivered in my opinion, lately ive been going to the movies and seeing nothing but garbage. Im used to being bored and disappointed going into the theaters and this movie was a bit of fresh air for me, the plot was simple yet well executed, and the ending of the movie was very good, some might say just plain wrong. I was satisfied, not wowed , but satisfied , and for that reason im going to recommend all of you to go check it out. Its a good movie to watch in theaters but i think it's a great great rental if you don't mind waiting. Either was in my opinion is a fine way of viewing it.
